Loggedflorescent, because the pinkies just look so much better in white light. With the normal orange/yellowed lighting, the pictures tend to come out with a yellowish tone and the pinky skins looks darker than they are Natural day light is preferred by me, but most of the time I take photos of my girls late at night after all the school work so I always end up using just the normal lighting.

Loggedyeah, I hate the yellow tone you get when shooting indoors... you can't even fix it in photoshop If your camera has a setting for "indoor" it's worth using, though it doesn't always work, at least, mine doesn't. You can use normal lamps, but buy daylight bulbs that will give you a good, white light

LoggedI only use fluorescent lights when taking photos of my pinkys. I don't like the yellow light type, they pictures will turn out so yellowish, sometimes the effect is nice, but I rarely want that effect for my pinky photos. I don't often use the daylight, because it's just not strong enough (unless I'm outdoor) but the daylight just simply shining through the window doesn't do it for me... Maybe it's just the place I live in, though.

LoggedMy camera has a setting that allows all light to 'look' like white light anyway. But sometimes I purposely use the wrong setting to give my pics a deliberate blue or orange tinge. To make them appear cooler or warmer respectively.

LoggedI just thought, in many cameras there is a setting where you can manually set the colour balance. This basically works by putting a sheet of white paper (or anything else that's white) and actually telling the camera that it's white. Then you remove it and take a photo as normal. It should come out with correct colour. You may need to look in your camera manual to see if it can do it and how

LoggedBuilt-in flash is horrible for close ups of Pinkies, it just bleaches out the subject. Did the photo end up blurry because you moved the camera accidentally? Or did the light not light up the Pinky too well? Why don't you post the photo here and maybe we can figure out what went wrong?

LoggedWell when taking close up pics, like of Pinkys. Then you don't have to move much to create a very noticeable blur. Some cameras have settings that compensate for this. Otherwise you'll just have to use a timer, and sit your camera on something, so that when it takes the pic your not even touching it at all.

LoggedI know it wasn't listed as an option but I would have to say I prefer halogen lighting for indoor shooting. It has a slightly bluer tinge to it and is fairly easy to white balance in photoshop. ...and a huge plus with halogen is that they tend to be very small lights so you can cart them to wherever you're shooting. In fact, you could pick up a set of three at Ikea for next to nothing and build a simple diffuser and you would have the perfect indoor Pinky studio set up. (I need to make a mental note to go do that .)I'd also recommend a tripod for indoor shooting support to take care of the low-light blurring problems. You should be able to pick up a small table top tripod at any well stocked camera shop for $20-30. ...In fact I think you can find them in almost any store that sells digital cameras.

If you have access to a tripod, try setting your camera to no flash, then use the built-in self-timer. Click then leave the camera timer to expire. A lot of cameras will compensate for the low lighting with a slower shutter speed. Death if you don't have a tripod, but if you do, it'll come out bright, without the blur. And about using lamps, it depends on what kind of lamp you have, and what effect you want. If your lamp is too strong, you can point it away from the pinky, then use a large piece of foil or a large piece of white paper as a reflector to bounce the light to your subject. The light will come out softer and a tad diffused. I suggest taking snapshots with different lighting set-ups to pick what's the most suitable with the lights you have.

Loggedthat's good advice Kaoko I've recently switched to bulbs that are used in downlighters. I find them too bright to point straight at pinkies (you get very sharp shadows and bleached out areas on their faces) and when I put a sheet of paper in front to diffuse light, it's too dense and the set isn't lit enough. So I set up white cardboard sheets and point the lights at them - this in turn throws enough light at the Pinkies and the set I used to have paper lanterns, I'd put one each side and have additional light above, plus reflectors to minimise shadows underneath, like under Pinky chins, etc

LoggedIf you are shooting using regular bulbs as your lighting and get that yellow cast, you can either try doing a custom white balance on your camera or using your image editing software (like photoshop) to minimize the yellow cast. With PS, you would just add the opposite color of yellow which is blue.
If you use fluoresecent lighting, then you might get a green cast in your pics. To counter balance this, you can add more magenta (which is the opposite of green).
All the pinky pictures I've taken have been with natural light coming from my window. I mount my DSLR on my tripod and use a cable release. A cable release is a corded remote that I connect to my camera and instead of pressing the shutter button to take the pic, I use that to avoid shaking the camera.
I do shoot longer exposures too. Sometimes, I'll take pics as the sun is already going down so my exposures might be a long as 2 seconds.
