camera problems... any ideas?

So, I have a lovely little digital camera, that my parents bought me for Christmas.  It's a Canon Powershot A610, if anyone knows about these things.

Anyway, I no longer seems willing to upload pictures to my computer.  I plug it in just fine, with the lovely cable thingy... and the computer boops at me... and then nothing.  Normally the blue download buttong turns on, and the menu comes up on the camera, but now it's just freezing on me.

I don't know what i'll do if I can't upload photos!

anyone have any idea if it might be the cable, or the camera?  I really hope it isn't the camera, because it's a frigging Canon!  I mean, come on!  It's not even a year old.  And I certainly don't manhandle it, yanno?  It's a GOOD camera, and I take good care of it.

I am sad.   Crying

I've got a Canon Powershot A620, not that this gives me any real insight. But... my thought is that maybe it is your memory card, actually. I know those can get buggy. The other thing I've noticed is that, for me, with the really big memory cards (1GB or more) once they start getting full, it takes a *really* long time for the camera to finish talking to the computer so that you can start downloading the photos. Are you definitely frozen? Do you think it might work if you waited it out? Or maybe you don't have enough temporary memory (whatever that is Ram? ROM?) on your system to cope... Sometimes it helps to restart if you havent done that in a while.
These are really pathetic ideas, but hopefully you've already got it fixed anyway!!  Nervous

Huh, yanno I hadn't thought of that.  I think that the memory card is getting pretty full, and it is a 1GB card.  I'll go try that.

Thanks Nightfall!   Hug!

hmm... the computer is freezing?
i'd say try the memory card first. there's only so many things that can go wrong with a memory card, and infinitely more that can be wrong with the camera.
do you still have the 32/64 mb card that came with the camera originally? try to snap a few shots with that and see if you get the same problem.
also, do you ever format your memory card? it's almost like giving it a cleaning, but not. many people never think to do this, but if you never format it, the card has a higher chance of failing. if you can see the pictures on your camera but not on your computer, most likely it's a memory card problem, and many times formatting it helps.
but DO NOT FORMAT THE CARD IF YOU WANT THE PICTURES ON IT. formatting deletes all photos. essentially 'cleaning it.'
finally, if you have one, try the memory card in a card reader. many computers have card readers, and if not you can buy portable ones.
these things will all rule out the memory card. please let me know if the memory card is well so i can start diagnosing the camera.
i used to work at a best buy for a few years, and i'd see problems like this all the time. 99% of the time it was the memory card.
good luck!   Awesome!

well, I tried deleting all the old pictures off the big memory card, and then plugging it in.  Nothing.  It's actually the camera that's "freezing" not the computer.  And it's just while it's plugged into the computer that it won't do anything, once i unplug it, it's fine again.

i switched to the smaller memory card, and the camera is still doing the same bloody thing.  sounding more and more like the camera to me. Sigh...  i really don't want it to be the camera, though!  it's a really nice camera!   Crying

when i plug it into the computer, the computer makes that noise it makes when you plug hardware into it, which makes me think that the cable is working, trying to read from the camera.

I just formatted the memory card and tried again.  nothing.

thanks for the suggestions, though, itachi!  i appreciate it.  sounds like i need to have the camera looked at, doesn't it?

ah, House =  Heart  I love the little heart over Cameron's head too. I actually just started watching season one *again* the other day.

I'm pretty sure the camera is still under warranty.  Have to get it out, though.  I got it for christmas last year, so i think it is.  for another couple months at least.   Cute smile

stupid camera!  Doh!!

There's a good chance your drivers for windows got messed up somehow.  Can you reinstall the drivers for it?  Also trying out the camera on another computer can give you a good indication if the camera or software is at fault.

I suggest you get a card reader and see if you still have the same problem with the memory cards.  I don't think it's your camera or the memory card but your computer.

If there was a problem with the memory card, your camera wouldn't be able to write to it when you take a pic.

Could it be the USB cable?  This happened to me once.  The camera and PC could not communicate.  I used the USB cable of my other camera and it worked.
