Plaster of Paris?

I've been lurking somewhat through these boards and I have to really thank everyone; a lot of the tutorials and ideas I've seen here so far are amazing! :) I've even got around to buying some materials to try and customize my own Pinky, but I do have a question.

I've been attempting to follow the two mold Pinky tutorial by tsuki, but unfortunately, plasticine isn't sold where I'm from, and I have to order it from the U.S., but in bulk.  Crying Can anyone recommend another alternative?

Someone also told me that I can cast my Pinky using plaster of paris as a mold. He casts armors and large props using plaster of paris, and says it works pretty well as long as you don't drop the mold. Would using plaster of paris be another good alternative instead of say, silastic or silicone compound (which is rather hard to find where I live)?

Thanks!  Sparkle!

My first mold was made from plaster!! Maybe it wasn't plaster of paris, just building plaster but I think it's similar (it difference with size and quantity of  plaster particle, right?).

First... the plaster mold is really fragile. You can easily break some parts (when you try to get out original pinky part from it).
Second, and worse one is that plasitc probably makes some chemical reaction with plaster and it changes it's structure or sth... and after plastic is fixed it looks like a some kind of mousse with lots of bubbles  WTH?! I don't have to say that those parts are not usable as a pinky parts :( they aren't rigid enough.
Maybe if you use an isolation on plaster then it won't turn out like that, I used vaseline only.

And I have good kind of plastic because the one that was unused (left in plastic cup) fixed in the right way.

Here are pics I've taken...

I haven't dabbled in mold making yet, but I'm leaning towards Tsuki's two-part mold tutorial as guidance for my first attempt too.

If you can't find plasticine locally you should be able to find some on eBay rather cheaply. A search for "play clay" tends to bring up the most results. You could always try making your own play-dough style clay too. There are plenty of recipes out there, though I can't say if they would cause any strange reactions or be too soft.

Mumka, thanks for posting your visual warning on plaster molds!

Yeah, plastic may have that reaction, but what do you think about super sculpey?  Would that work?  I think I'm going to try it.

Thank you very much, that's a great help!  :peyes: I guess plaster of paris won't be a good substitute then.

Does this mean most types of play dough can be used instead of plasticine then?

And what are the ingredients people normally use to make the actual plastic pinky part? (I've been looking for polyurethane resin, but no one here seems to know what that is.)

Thanks again! ^_^

I think poliurethane resin is the best (if not the only) way to make pinky parts. I have one too. There are a lots of types there, I have 61D. You can find it on this site http://www.smooth-on.com/ (they have a list of distributors on their site)
They aren't that expencive I think but shipping cost might kill (but I don't know, it depends on distributor probably). You can look for 'liquid plastic' too.

so that's all I now about this stuff  Razz! Hope you find what you need. Coraline!  Flower in Hair
